How UAE annual leave accrues
- First 6 months: no annual leave due yet
- 6–12 months: 2 days for every month of service
- After 1 year: 30 days per year (accruing at 2.5 days per month through each year)
- Cash value of a leave day = monthly basic salary ÷ 30
- Unused days are paid in cash in your final settlement when service ends
Worked example
John's basic salary is AED 6,000. He has worked 3 years and 4 months and taken 40 days of leave in total.
Accrued = (3 × 30) + (4 × 2.5) = 100 days · Balance = 100 − 40 = 60 days
Daily rate = 6,000 ÷ 30 = AED 200 → Leave value = 60 × 200 = AED 12,000
Frequently asked questions
How many days of annual leave do you get in the UAE?
30 calendar days per year once you complete one year of service. Between 6 months and 1 year of service, you accrue 2 days per month. Below 6 months, annual leave is not yet due (Article 29, Federal Decree-Law 33/2021).
Is UAE leave salary calculated on basic or total salary?
Annual leave pay — and the cash value of unused leave when your service ends — is based on your basic salary: monthly basic divided by 30, per day of leave. Some employers voluntarily pay on total salary, but the legal minimum is the basic wage.
What happens to my unused leave when I resign in the UAE?
Your unused, accrued leave days are paid out in cash as part of your final settlement, at the basic-salary daily rate, regardless of how long the days have been carried forward.
Can my employer refuse to let me take annual leave?
The employer can schedule leave dates according to work needs and can split leave into at most two periods, but cannot make you forfeit it. Leave can be carried forward or encashed as your contract and company policy provide, within the law.
Does annual leave in the UAE include weekends?
UAE annual leave is counted in calendar days. Public holidays that fall inside your annual leave are counted as part of the leave, not in addition to it.
