Bahrain Gratuity Calculator — SIO-Aware (The 2024 System, Explained)
Bahrain quietly made the biggest end-of-service change in the Gulf: on 1 March 2024, expat gratuity stopped being an employer lump sum and became an SIO-funded benefit. Almost every Bahrain calculator online still uses only the old formula. This one splits your service at March 2024 and shows both parts.
| Part | Amount (BHD) | Paid by |
|---|
Your SIO payout and employer lump sum may arrive separately — plan the transfer home once, at a good rate, instead of paying bank fees twice.
How Bahrain end of service works now
- Service before 1 Mar 2024 (old system, Art. 116): employer owes you a lump sum at exit — half a month's wage per year for the first 3 years, one month per year after
- Service from 1 Mar 2024 (SIO system, Resolution 109/2023): your employer pays the SIO a monthly contribution of 4.2% of your wage during your first 3 years of service and 8.4% after that; the SIO pays you the accumulated benefit when your service ends
- Contribution wage = basic salary + social allowance, as registered with the SIO
- The SIO part is an estimate of contributions paid in — check your actual balance with the SIO
Worked example
Laila joined on 1 June 2022, last day 31 May 2026 (4 years), wage BHD 700.
Pre-SIO part (Jun 2022 – Feb 2024, 1.75 years, all inside the first 3): ½ month × 1.75 = 0.875 months → BHD 612.50 from her employer at exit.
SIO part (Mar 2024 – May 2026, 27 months): her first 3 service years complete in May 2025, so 15 months at 4.2% (BHD 29.40/mo) + 12 months at 8.4% (BHD 58.80/mo) = 441 + 705.60 = ≈ BHD 1,146.60 in her SIO fund.

Frequently asked questions
How does end of service work in Bahrain now?
Since 1 March 2024 (Resolution 109/2023), expat end of service benefits in Bahrain are funded through the Social Insurance Organisation (SIO). Your employer pays a monthly contribution — 4.2% of your wage for your first 3 years of service, 8.4% after that — into your SIO end-of-service account instead of owing you a lump sum at exit.
What happens to my service before March 2024 in Bahrain?
Service before 1 March 2024 stays under the old system: your employer still owes you that part directly as a lump sum at the end of service, calculated under old Article 116 — half a month's wage per year for the first 3 years, one month per year after.
Who pays my Bahrain end of service money now — employer or SIO?
Both, if your service spans March 2024: the pre-March-2024 part is paid by your employer at exit, and the post-March-2024 part is paid by the SIO from the contributions your employer made. If all your service is after March 2024, the SIO pays everything.
Which wage is used for Bahrain SIO contributions?
The contribution wage is your basic salary plus the social allowance, as registered with the SIO. If your employer registered a lower wage than your real one, your end-of-service fund will be smaller — check your SIO record.
Does quitting change my Bahrain end of service?
For the SIO period, contributions already made stay in your account. For the pre-2024 employer-paid part, the old rules — including resignation conditions — still apply to that portion, so the calculator's pre-2024 figure assumes full entitlement (termination or contract end).
